Surging demand forecast for offshore energy services

“The offshore oilfield services sector is facing unprecedented levels of business; some companies that might normally have a six-month backlog are now booking work for 2011. Recent $100 oil has only served to add to the already massive demand for the products and services of firms that supply the offshore oil & gas companies. Suppliers are virtually beating off the customers, but demand continues to grow.

In his annual address to some 150 oil industry executives at the Society of Underwater Technology in Houston today, John Westwood, of energy business analysts Douglas-Westwood, delivered a portfolio of forecasts of future prospects for offshore energy industry business sectors.

Skills shortages could scupper UK energy plans

Surging demand for energy, an aging workforce and a lack of new entrants to the industry is combining to threaten delivery of the energy strategies of countries worldwide. Addressing delegates at the ‘People: The Real Energy in Oil & Gas’ conference in London today, John Westwood, MD of energy business analysts Douglas-Westwood, cited the UK as likely to have particular problems with delivery of its power station replacement and renewable energy plans. “We are seeing an unprecedented demand for energy, driven by China in particular, at the same time as production of oil & gas is reducing in non-OPEC areas such as the UK North Sea. The result is oil prices at record levels and a surge in exploration & production activity, particularly in the Middle East. This is fuelling major worldwide competition for human resources at all levels, but the key need is for experienced staff.

5th April 2006: Offshore Wind: At a Crossroads

The UK’s leading renewable energy body BWEA, together with Renewables East, the renewable energy agency for the East of England, today releases new research which shows that the offshore wind industry is at a critical crossroads.

The report, written by DWL and BVG Assocaites was undertaken over the past four months through extensive interviews with over thirty companies active in the sector, has shown that without additional support for the sector only 2,000 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind capacity will be installed in UK waters by 2015.

BWEA is today, at its Offshore Wind Conference in London, urging the Government to ensure it prioritises offshore wind in the current Energy Review and to put in place the necessary measures to ensure the current economic gap for offshore wind is closed while maintaining the strong progress being achieved onshore.
